Insights From Leigh Day, ShareRing’s Digital Identity Advisor

Tell us about your background in the digital identity space.

“In 2019, I stumbled into the digital identity space while researching for a small project.

As a member of the Digital Identity and Authentication Council of Canada, a coalition of representatives from various industries, we collaborate to develop the Pan Canadian Trust Framework

This framework ensures safe and convenient digital identity adoption for all Canadians, with benefits including enhanced privacy and convenience in everyday life.

Drawing on insights from the many 'identerati' within DIACC, I now consult for various companies in the digital identity space, working across a variety of technologies, geographies, and use-cases.”

How would you define digital identity in the context of businesses?

“Overall, in the context of businesses, digital identity refers to the collection of digital attributes and characteristics that uniquely identify individuals, organizations, or products in the online world, facilitating secure and trusted digital interactions.”

What growth have you witnessed in the industry over the last 5 years?

“Regulatory tailwinds, combined with the COVID19 pandemic, have combined to drive digital ID adoption in many scenarios.”

Are there any new regulations and laws coming into effect for digital identities, specifically for UK/AUS?

“Australia has been developing the Trusted Digital Identity System (TDI) with the accreditation framework for digital identity services, TDIF, since late 2017.

In early 2022, Commonwealth and State Ministers announced an agreement to progress the national TDI system, with new components being developed over time. The TDI system aims to provide a trusted digital identity service that will facilitate secure and convenient online transactions for Australians.

In the UK, the Digital Identity and Attributes Trust Framework has been introduced to set out the rules and standards for digital identity verification services used by public and private organizations.

This framework aims to improve the security and convenience of digital identity verification, while also protecting user privacy and ensuring interoperability between different digital identity systems.

Additionally, the UK government has proposed a new Digital Identity Bill which is currently under review. The bill seeks to establish a legal framework for digital identity services and provide greater security and protection for users' personal information.”

Where do you think digital identities will be in the next 2 years?

“I see a shift towards verifiable credentials. Governments in many jurisdictions are now responsible for issuing citizen identities, and we're seeing digital versions of traditional photo ID cards being launched as verifiable credentials that conform to recognized interoperable standards.

These credentials are often ingested into digital identity wallets of the citizen's choosing, allowing them to present the credential to prove their identity in a privacy-preserving, consent-driven, and data-minimizing way.

Blockchain-based networks can be used to legitimize the credentials and verify their currency and good standing in real-time.

Additionally, blockchain networks can be used to obfuscate from issuing governments where and when the citizen is using their identity, ensuring greater privacy and security.”

We hope that Leigh's insights have provided a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the digital identity space.
